Japan Corporate Research (JCR) has an approach and a
background that enables us to provide unique services to
our clients.
* Our Approach
With one office in Tokyo and another in northern Ohio, JCR is well positioned
to serve its clients in both markets. In our work, we make heavy use of
specialized Japanese-language electronic databases and industry-specific
libraries and research facilities throughout Japan. Little-known Japanese
industry journals are frequently used to support industry and company
research. JCR specializes in tracking down information on privately held
companies and lesser-known industries. Where feasible, we of course
conduct telephone and in-person interviews at companies, industry
associations and government agencies.
Client projects have ranged from one- or two-day jobs visiting or researching
individual companies to comprehensive industry overviews that lasted
several months. A popular service with some clients has been our company
and industry monitoring service, in which we regularly watch the major
information sources for news about a specific company or industry and
report this on a regular basis to the client. For industry associations, we
provide ongoing information on government regulations, assistance in
negotiations, statistical updates, liaison with Japanese counterpart
organizations, and trade show assistance and support. JCR frequently
provides Japanese language interpreting to its clients during their visits to
Japan.
* Our Background
JCR’s principal, Hal Offutt, has been involved with Japan continuously since
1965. Prior to establishing JCR in September 1988, he worked for ten
years in the securities industry as an analyst of Japanese companies and
industries in areas such as machinery, automation, manufacturing, consumer
electronics, insurance, and retailing. Offutt worked for Jardine Fleming
Securities and Merrill Lynch, becoming the head of Japanese equity
research at the Tokyo Branch of Merrill Lynch. Offutt received a Master’s
Degree in East Asian Regional Studies from Harvard University in 1971 and
did post-graduate work at Tokyo University for two and one-half years. Offutt
has authored many articles on various subjects in both English and
Japanese. He is fluent in written and spoken Japanese and has resided in
Japan for over 20 years.
